Romans 9 – Israel’s Failure to Understand Justification

Paul’s Grief – v.1-5

At the very pinnacle of expressing joy in our spiritual life, Paul remembers his kinsmen

The Word of God – v.6-13

God’s word never fails.  The first argument (objection), presented here appears to be: “What about God’s plan for the na= tion of Israel?” “What about His covenant with the people of Israel?” “Did His covenant fail or did His work among them become ineffective?”

A Historical Reminder:

God’s Promise (v.8) – Spiritual heri= tage through God’s promise

God’s Purpose (v.11) – God’s c= hoice belongs to Him and is for His reasons

God’s Call (v.11) (see Rom 8:30) – God is the one at work in redemptive history<= /p>

The Justice of God – v.14-18

The second argument br= ings into question God’s justice.  Obviously, God is always just.  The point we miss is that justice as we measure it, would bring us a= ll into judgment. 

God’s Mercy brin= gs Justification, not condemnation (= see Rom 8:30)

The Will of God – v.19-21

The third objection is= to the irresistibility of His will. Paul counters with a contrast between the Crea= ture and the Creator (the thing shaped and the One who shapes it) There are three elements, which avoid many of the more convoluted theological debates on God’s sovereignty.

Submission to His Authority – to argue wit= h God is irrelevant, nay rebellion

Submission to His Ownership – As owner, Go= d can make of us what He wills.

Submission to His Purpose – God can use an= yone, great or small to fulfill His purpose. 2Tim2:20-21

The Patience of God – v.22-29        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;     

Vessels of Wrath Prepared for Destruction

= Does not say prepared beforehand as v.23. Ryrie suggests “ripe for destruction because of their own actions of reje= cting the truth.”

Vessels of Mercy Prepared Beforehand for Glory (= see Rom 8:30)

The Stumbling Stone & God’s Righteousness – 9:30-33 &am= p; 10:1-4

Righteousness (justification) comes only by fait= h

We must submit to God’s righteousness - 10= :1-4
