Romans 10 – Does Wrong ever Seem Right?

&nbs= p; Paul’s real concern in this chapter is Israel’s rejection of Truth in righteousness. When truth came (Jesus Christ), the Je= ws were not prepared for his coming. Their focus was procedural rather than heart knowledge. The Bible says that “Jesus c= ame to his own and they knew Him not” John 1:11. During Jesus= 217; ministry, the rulers of Judaism saw Him physically, but rejected His words spiritually. We see that toda= y. Many people have a form of Godliness, but deny the power of God (2 Timothy 3:5). A real stumbling block for the Jew is t= heir belief in righteousness through the law.&n= bsp; True righteousness originates in God, not man. The deeper a person delves into law generated by man, the farther they get from the true righte= ousness of God. Jesus said, Matthew 5:1= 7 "Do not think that I ha= ve come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

&nbs= p; The law was God’s promise to His people of how they should live.&n= bsp; Grace through Jesus is w= hy we should live. John 1:17 “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Je= sus Christ.”

I. An Indictment Against His Jewish Kinsmen – Romans 10:1-4

   &nbs= p;        A. Paul pleaded for the salvation= of his fellow Jews.

Why would Paul make this plea? Because he knew the hearts of his = Jewish brothers, as he did his.

   &nbs= p;        Galatians 1:13-17 “I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealo= us for the traditions of my fathers. = ¹⁵But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his gr= ace, was pleased ¹⁶ to r= eveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not cons= ult any man.” NIV

   &nbs= p;        B. Zealous for God’s law, n= ot God’s Son.

   &nbs= p;        C. Jesus fulfilled the law and the prophets when He came to us. = His ministry was a covenant of   &nbs= p;          the heart – Love the Lord your God and Love your neighbor as yourself - Matthew 22:37-40.

Telos – Greek wor= d for end = – can mean termination or fulfillment, in this case the latter is true.

II. Christ= is Lord of All – Romans 10:5-13

   &nbs= p;        A. The law was given to teach the Israelites how to live righteously under God’s direction. It’s words = ;            &= nbsp;   speaks of obedient living between God and man and Man to man.

   &nbs= p;        B. The righteousness of faith is = not based by deeds ascending or descending to obtain Christ, but         &= nbsp;           &= nbsp;           &= nbsp;   readily available through ones heart.

   &nbs= p;        Romans 10:8-11 “That= if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. ¹⁰ For it is with your= heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you conf= ess and are saved.” NIV

   &nbs= p;        C. With God there is no distincti= on between Jew or Greek (Gentile).

Romans 1:16-17 “= ;I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation= of everyone who believes: first for th= e Jew, then for the Gentile. ¹⁷For in the gospel a righteousness     from God is revealed, a righteousness that is = by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The    = righteous will live by faith." (The Theme of the book of Romans)

III. A Gospel for All Who Believe – Romans 10:14-1= 7

   &nbs= p;        A. Rhetorical questions about sal= vation – Meant for the Jews

   &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;       1) How can one call on God if they do not know Him?

   &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;       2) How can one believe in someone they have never heard of?

   &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;       3) How can one hear His truth without proclamation?

   &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;       4) How can one speak the truth, if th= ey are not called by truth?

   &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;       Vs. 15b – “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the Good News.”

   &nbs= p;        B. Not all accept – Why? It is a matter of belief in the message.

   &nbs= p;        C. The Message comes by hearing the Words of Christ= and believing by faith.

IV. The Go= spel Rejected – Romans 10:18-21

   &nbs= p;        A. Did the Israelites have the opportunity to hear? Psalm 19:4 explains

   &nbs= p;        B. Did the Israelites not underst= and – Surely they did. Romans 2:14-15 and Deut. 32:21

   &nbs= p;        C. A statement of fact that the Gentiles received what the Jews rejected – Jesus the Messiah.
