KEY WORDS IN ROMANS

A reference from “Coming to Terms with Sin” by Charles Swindoll

Condemnation – It is God’s judgment of sin and its depravity against mankind. After we receive Christ,

God does not condemn us any more, but sees us through the eyes of His Son, Jesus Christ - Rom 8:1.

Faith – The accepted dependence on Christ’s work on the cross which enables security in God to the

believer. Hebrews 11:1 says it is “The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” NAS. Faith gives us the courage to face the present with confidence and the future with expectancy.

Foreknowledge – It is God knowing all things before they come to pass.  God also determines what will

come to pass through the competence of those He calls.

Glorification – The completed process of sanctification.  It is the point when we are separated from the body

and present with the Lord, apart from sins grip. We receive our glorified bodies at this point.

Gospel – It is the “Good News” of God’s redemption through His Son Jesus Christ for all mankind.

Grace – It is God’s free will gift of unmerited favor to those who believe in Christ as their personal Savior.

Justification – It is God’s declaration to the believer that His righteousness protects them from wrath and

            condemnation.

The Law – God’s Apodictic (unchanging and indisputable truths) commands for all mankind.

PredestinationEphesians 1:11b says “According to the plan of him who works out everything in

conformity with the purpose of his will.” NIV. With God, it is Him selecting those who, through faith, would accept His Son as their Lord and Savior. Remember God sees the heart of everyone. He knows           what our bent is or would be towards Him.

Propitiation – It’s God’s wrath being satisfied by the acceptance of Christ as a personal sacrifice against

sin.

Righteousness – God’s righteousness is without sin, completely holy through His nature and truth exposed

to Mankind.  For the believer it is God’s will for us to adhere to in this life.

Salvation – God has a plan for all men to be in fellowship and relationship with Him apart from our sinful

nature. It is Christ crucified on our behalf that makes us eligible for this experience. No one can see

the Father and His Heaven apart from belief in Christ’s sacrifice as the atonement for our sin.

Sanctification- It is the process of the believer after salvation in which we are becoming like Christ and

mature as a child of God. Could be called practical Christianity for life.

Sin – It is our moral condition apart from God and His law. It is the evil which is present in the world,

disallowing any standard of God’s work for mankind.

Works – Good works are honorable before the Lord. It is the joy of service that grows out of our love for

Christ and His work on the Cross for our behalf.  Works are not purposed for us to find favor with        God, but rather works are a result of our dedication and love of God and His Son.
